As high heat and humidity continue to put heavy demand on cooling systems across the greater Houston area, A1 Plus Electrical, Plumbing and Air is warning homeowners about installation and sizing mistakes that can contribute to high energy bills, indoor humidity problems, and premature HVAC system failure. A1 Plus has been offering expert Air Conditioning Repair in Houston, and has been in business since 2007.
Houston’s hot, humid climate means many air conditioning systems run for eight to nine months of the year. With equipment working for much of the year, problems with sizing, airflow, ductwork, and installation can become more noticeable and put additional strain on the system.

According to A1 Plus, one common problem begins before the air conditioner is even installed. Some contractors still rely on general rules of thumb, such as installing one ton of cooling capacity for every 500 square feet. However, square footage alone does not account for factors such as insulation, windows, ceiling height, or the direction the home faces.
An oversized air conditioner may reach the thermostat setting quickly, but that is not always a good thing. When the system cools the home too fast, it shuts off before running long enough to properly remove moisture from the indoor air. This process, known as short cycling, can leave a home feeling damp or sticky even when the thermostat reads 72°F.
“Here in Houston, cooling the house is only part of the job. The system also needs enough run time to pull humidity out of the air,” said Robert Dykes, General Manager at A1 Plus Electrical, Plumbing and Air. “A bigger unit is not automatically a better unit. It needs to be sized for the actual home.”
Ductwork can create another set of problems. Undersized, crushed, or deteriorating flexible ducts can restrict airflow and increase static pressure within the HVAC system. That added resistance forces blower motors to work harder and can contribute to frozen evaporator coils and compressor problems.
Older ductwork can also become an issue over time. Flexible ductwork typically has a lifespan of around 15 to 25 years. As it ages, insulation and other materials can deteriorate, affecting airflow and system performance.
A1 Plus also points to installation shortcuts as a potential source of long-term HVAC problems. Modern refrigerant blends can fractionate during a leak, meaning some components may escape faster than others. Because the refrigerant left behind may no longer have the proper composition, simply adding more refrigerant does not always correct the underlying problem.
Moisture left inside refrigerant lines can cause additional damage. Proper evacuation removes moisture from the lines before the system is put into operation. When that step is skipped or rushed, moisture can react with synthetic oil and create acids that damage compressor windings over time.
For Houston homeowners replacing an HVAC system, A1 Plus recommends looking beyond equipment size and brand. Proper sizing should begin with an ACCA Manual J load calculation, which evaluates the individual characteristics of the home, including insulation, windows, ceiling height, and orientation.
Manual D calculations can then be used to determine proper duct sizing and design, while static pressure testing can help identify airflow restrictions within an existing system.
These steps can make a significant difference in how an HVAC system performs in Houston’s climate. A properly sized and installed system has a better chance of controlling both temperature and humidity while avoiding unnecessary strain on major components.
For homeowners, paying attention to how an HVAC system is sized and installed can also help prevent a system expected to last around 15 years from experiencing major problems after only eight to 10 years.
