Four thousand metres down, where sunlight never reaches, scientists have found a hidden world. Using a deep-sea robot, they discovered an entire ecosystem thriving around vents that spew scalding, mineral-rich water. Among the surprises: translucent shrimp, metre-tall tube worms, and a bioluminescent jelly pulsing pink light. Researchers believe at least forty new species live here, living on chemistry instead of sunlight. This rare discovery shows how life can flourish in Earth’s most extreme places—and reminds us how much of the deep ocean still waits to be explored.
