Mother and Daughter Reunited After Nearly 50 Years Apart

A Louisiana mother, Lillian Higgins, has been reunited with her daughter, Heather Palmer, after a separation of nearly five decades. The reunion occurred after Higgins was pressured to give Palmer up for adoption shortly after her birth in 1976. Reports indicate that Palmer’s mixed-race background was a contributing factor in the pressure Higgins faced.

The emotional reunion was made possible through the use of a genealogy website. A relative of Higgins discovered a DNA match with Palmer on the site. Palmer, who had also been actively searching for her birth family, was able to connect with Higgins. The meeting took place in Pineville, Louisiana.

Describing the experience, Palmer stated that the connection felt immediate, as if they had always known each other. The nearly 50-year separation came to an end through this genealogical discovery and subsequent meeting.
